European bullmastiffs

Welcome to the site dedicated to European-bred Bullmastiffs!

The Bullmastiff is a great, friendly and yet very powerful dog. The breed was originally a cross between the English Mastiff and the Old English Bulldog. Originally bred to find and immobilize poachers, the breed has proven popular as a family pet. They are great with kids, people and seem to do well with other dogs. Being a large and heavy breed, they need a moderate amount of correct exercising, healthy diet with mineral supplements, and proper training for mental and physical stimulation.
The life span is 8-11 years. Most common hereditary diseases are: hip displasya (although in Europe such dogs are commonly found in breeding and not considered unworthy), entroption (easy to correct), hypothyroidism, cancer, arthritis and bloat.
The European standard allows for much heavier dogs than the AKC standard. Males can be around 170-180 lbs. This doesn't mean there is something wrong with all the European breeders and breeding, it's just there is a different vision of the perfect bullmastiff specimen. To be continued...
